Abstract
Rudolf Steiner repeatedly described the relationship between plants, metals and planets and how the relationship of plants to metals can be used to gain particularly active medicinal products. The method of ‘vegetabilization’ of metals yields an enhanced metal effect and gives the plant greater ‘medicinal value’. During its development the plant is under the influence of earthly (out-streaming) and cosmic (in-streaming) forces. With the metal taken up into the life-sphere of the plant and through several ‘vegetabilization’ stages, we may speak of a kind of potentization or ‘homoeopathization’ of the metal. The plant, on the other hand, is strengthened by its confrontation with related metals in relation to the corresponding planet.
The metal is drawn into the rhythms which take place in the plant world. By passing through the seasons as well as the changes from day to night the metal experiences qualities of expansion and contraction.
The vital forces contained in the earth as a result of the cosmic activity from the previous year influence the development of particular parts of a plant. Current cosmic forces influence the development of other plant parts. It is postulated that the metal-treated plant develops its own inner planetary forces and this changes its connection with its planet. This modifies the cosmic ‘influences of the current year’ in the first year and from the second year on also the cosmic ‘influences of the previous year’. Here lies a possible explanation for the three years’ vegetabilization process of metals.
Seeds of plants which have not been treated with metals are used in all three development cycles. In this way the developing new plant can represent a pure medium which brings the metal under the influence of cosmic forces a species-specific way so that particular metal qualities are revealed.
Antimony (Stibium) differs from the ‘planetary metals’ in that it has such a strong relationship to the etheric, which comes to expression in different phenomena. Vegetabilization of Antimony is therefore not necessary.
