Abstract
Sickness can lead to individual development and growing maturity of the person. Treatment and advice given to seriously ill patients take their orientation from this outlook and the way human evolution is open to the future. The role and significance of people around a patient is not often discussed. Professionals, family and friends share the difficult times of the sickness and mature in their own development. Under this aspect, sickness and healing are not only individual but also community destiny, with a part, a present and a
future. The paths of the individual and the community are not separate but show a mutual interaction and relationship. Healing has individual and community significance under this aspect, and because of its human significance contributes to the ripening and
development of the civilization and age. The individual and the society way of dealing with serious diseases is thus a kind of cultural barometer indicating if our actions are guided by loss of meaning with palliative sedation the inevitable consequence, active assistance
with dying, or finding meaning with future prospects and spiritual development.
